Phrygian neighbor

Open 5 to fret-1 5 and back. The smallest move with the meanest sound.

Half-steps through gain are the Phrygian signature of metalcore. Intonation and mute have to travel together.

Fret 1 has to be in tune. Heavy strings go sharp if you squeeze.

  1. 01

Barre the lowest two strings. Slide 0–1–0 as 8ths, fully muted.

  2. 02

Keep contact — don't hop off the string. The slide is the note.

  3. 03

Then: open for a full beat, fret 1 as 16ths. Contrast long and short.

  4. 04

Add the fourth string (octave) once the two-string version is locked.
