Djent tightness

All lessons

Equal 16th bursts, honest silence, and why the noise gate cannot save a sloppy rest.

Djent is a word for a mute. The guitar plays a short burst of identical 16ths and then nothing. The nothing has to be as clean as the burst or the bounce dies.

On the rest, the picking-hand palm stays down and the fretting hand lies across the strings. Two gates. A single gate leaks. Then — and only then — a noise gate on the amp is legal.

  • Start at 100 BPM. Speed is not the skill.
  • Record. Zoom in. If burst four is quieter than burst one, your hand is tiring — shrink the motion.
  • Once four-note bursts are even, write in 5s and 3s against the same 4/4 click.
