7/8, 5/8, and 9/8 as stomps: grouping, accents, and how to land back in 4/4.
Nobody feels 'seven.' They feel 2+2+3, or 3+2+2. Odd time in metal is a limp with a downbeat, not a math problem. If you count to seven every bar you will always be late.
Put the accents in the body
Set the metronome to 7/8 with a 2+2+3 grouping. Tap a foot only on the group starts — three taps per bar, uneven. That pattern is the riff. Chug 8ths and lean on those three points.
7/8 as 2+2+3
ONE two | ONE two | ONE two three X x | X x | X x x
- 5/8: 3+2 (long then short) or 2+3 (short then long). Pick one per section.
- 9/8: 2+2+2+3 feels like 4/4 with a hitch. 3+3+3 feels like a waltz that hits.
- Land the last group as an open 5 so the bar has a door.
The reset bar
Four bars of 7/8 then one bar of 4/4 is a classic move. The 4/4 is a breath the listener did not know they needed. Do not modulate; just stand up straight for a second.
