Writing a breakdown

All lessons

Half-time feel, space, and the one harmonic move that makes a breakdown land.

A breakdown is not 'play slower.' It is a half-time drum feel with guitar that still subdivides. The kick hits like a hammer; the guitar tells you where the next hammer is.

The grid

Take a 140 BPM verse. The breakdown is often the same click with the snare on 3 instead of 2 and 4 — 70 BPM in the body, 140 in the hands. Guitar: big hits on 1 and 3, glue in between.

Half-time crush (X = open or less-muted hit)

One harmonic idea

Do not write a new riff. Take the verse root and add a half-step neighbor (open 5 to fret 1) or a drop to the bVI (eighth-fret five). One move, repeated, with holes. The holes are where the crowd jumps.

  • Leave beat 2 empty at least once per phrase.
  • Put a pinch harmonic on a long hit, not on a 16th.
  • Match the drummer's kick. If you chug where they rest, you fight the punch.
  • Two bars of tension, two bars of the hook. Four-bar cells are enough.
